Antivirus Performance Comparison

When selecting antivirus software it is essential to know how much of your computer’s resources the program will use. The most effective programs are those that have only a minimal impact on system performance while providing superior protection against malware and viruses.

The majority of antivirus software companies release comprehensive test programs in PDF format. The reports provide a quick overview of the security as well as the performance and usability of each suite. They also include detailed graphs and charts which show the results of specific testing elements. Key figures to look out for include the percentage of real-world or reference set malware exposures that are neutralised, blocked or weakened by the program, as well as the number of false positive detections for benign software.

In AV-Comparatives’ tests from June 2023, Avast Free Antivirus for Mac had the highest pass rates for blocking Mac malware and PUAs (potentially unwanted applications) and the second highest score for Windows virus detection. It also scored well in the categories of passive, full-scan and quick-scan.

Bitdefender Total Security was the least intrusive paid program, followed by Kaspersky Total Security, and ESET Security Cloud Free. However it was also the slowest in the full-scan as well as quick-scan categories. The slight background impact could be due to the fact that the program does not run by default on Windows 10 and 11, like its competitors do.

Intego was the one with the lowest system impact for background scans and full scans however, it was able to find every bit of malware. It’s a rare company that is solely focused on Macs, making it a valuable addition to any security arsenal.
