What Is A Sober House?

The proposals that are selected need to meet CCRI’s current priorities and eligibility categories. The grants are typically used as one-time gap funding for capital projects that increase or improve the stock of affordable sober housing in Massachusetts. Other proposals that provide services for residents in MassHousing-financed rental housing, specifically those that address alcohol and/or drug abuse or addiction, are also considered for funding. CCRI grant recipients must be 501c3 non-profit organizations and matching funds must be provided. All proposals and applicant qualifications are stringently reviewed and vetted by MassHousing. BOSTON – December 17, 2021 – MassHousing has awarded a total of $627,350 in grant funding to create 46 new affordable sober housing units and preserve and additional 35 sober homes for men, women, families and senior citizens in eight communities. Our Rockland Recovery team is committed to helping people achieve recovery from addiction. However, we also strive to help people maintain that recovery for years to come. This is my story about how living in a sober house changed my life. We were founded jointly by Vanderburgh House, an operator of sober houses in Massachusetts, and Vanderburgh Communities, an organization supporting sober living and recovery home operators. My house manager, Joe, told me “I can’t get sober for you dude. This is your journey… I’m just here to help you find your way”. Joe would quickly become a mentor and friend, offering much needed advice about everything from work to women. I made many friends Sober Home that year, some who are still close to me today. I thought I would be giving up my free will… instead, I was learning how to reclaim it. In 2007, I decided that my life had become unmanageable and that I didn’t want to continue living the way I had been.

The Reality of Sober Living

With 8 current clients who are learning to walk a great path, all desiring a different life than they are leaving behind, I am struck by how different I thought it would be those years ago when I entered Joe’s house in Los Angeles. I experienced many new things through the people I met and the opportunities I was afforded in sobriety. I found a way to live life that is far happier than I ever had before the drinking or drugs began. After deciding that I was fully capable of maintaining my own sobriety without someone else “controlling my life”, I decided against a sobriety house, and chose to move in with friends from my treatment center instead. While my intentions were sincere, my conviction to stay the sober path was soon challenged. The North Cottage Program, Inc. is a residential facility for substance addiction treatment. The Bureau of Substance Addiction Services of the Dept. of Public Health of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts licenses it.

Since then, Vanderburgh House has contributed to the recovery community in many neighborhoods, strengthening and supporting the recovery community through promoting truly remarkable sober living. Massachusetts recognizes the need for quality sober housing and recovery resources. The support provided by sober home communities is combined with local clinical recovery support organizations to serve those in recovery from addiction. Grant funds will help create 10 new sober housing units for senior citizens with mental health needs at Mendes Monteiro House in Dartmouth. I quickly discovered that my mind’s concept of a controlling environment with supervision and strict management was very different from what I entered into that day. When I made a choice, it was my choice, and what I learned in the following months taught me how to make good choices for myself.
